Wednesday, March 14: The Art of Puppetry with LaFontsee Designs

Although many might think the art of puppetry and ventriloquism is lost in today’s modern society, musicals such as Avenue Q and artists such as Larry LaFontsee, co-owner of LaFontsee Designs, may prove otherwise. Larry LaFontsee and design partner, Lauren Rick, will give a once-in-a-lifetime presentation on puppetry theater and showcase puppet designs they make locally in Southeastern Wisconsin. A professional artist, LaFontsee specializes in….what else? Character design! His talents as a caricaturist, portraitist, illustrator, sculptor, and mold maker, combined with his theater craft arts background make him a sought after designer of characters that range from 2D cartoon mascots, to 3D animated puppets for film, as well as characters for corporate branding.

Wednesday, April 11: New Directions!

In preparation for the April 14th performance of the Beloit Janesville Symphony at JPAC, Maestro Rob Tomaro, Music Director of the BJSO, will give a presentation about his latest composition: a violin concerto that seeks to bridge the gap between the world of classical music and today’s pop scene. The concerto is entitled, Suite for Electric Violin, Rock Band and Symphony Orchestra, culled from his Jazz/Rock CD “Planet Z featuring Susan Aquila,” which recently debuted in the top twenty of the CMJ National Jazz Radio Survey to ecstatic reviews and which has just been named Best Jazz Rock Fusion CD of 2011 by Jazz Doctor Magazine, giving it the highest rating of five out of a possible five stars.

Maestro Rob Tomaro will speak about his composition process and explain the extraordinary combination of classical music and pop fusion in the world of orchestral repertoire.
