As a bird-friendly city, Janesville achieved Bird City designation in 2013 from Bird City Wisconsin. In order to achieve this designation, Janesville was able to show specific activities in the categories of "Creation and Protection of Habitat," "Promoting Effective Community Forest Management," "Limiting or Removing Hazards to Birds," and "Public Education." Among other things, these activities include an annual Celebration of Birds event, monitoring target species in the Robert O. Cook Memorial Arboretum, development of natural areas within the city, such as our greenbelt system, and many community education programs. Although Bird City refers to all of Janesville, the map below indicates the location of the Arboretum, which is one of many excellent locations to observe birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
