1. Head out on an adventurous treasure hunt and geocache the day away.
With 200 caches hidden within a five-mile radius, Janesville is a treasure trove for the GPS-wielding geocachers. If you have a GPS-enabled device, try your hand at finding a hidden treasure. Visit the Geocaching website, enter your coordinates, and choose a cache. Use the GPS to navigate to the location, then search for the secret container (treasure).
2. Warm your spirit with a tasting at any of our wineries.
The Janesville area is home to three unique and cozy wineries. Check out Northleaf Winery in nearby Milton, Wisconsin. This small family winery is housed in an interesting 1850 building that has a long agricultural history. You’ll love the winery’s selection of old world classics and new world favorites. They also offer delightful wine and chocolate pairings, wine flights with cheese and crackers, gifts and creative wine glass, stopper or charm crafts. Just around the block from Northleaf is Timber Hill Winery. This fun boutique winery uses cold climate varietals that can grow here in Wisconsin’s harsh winters, and produces wine in smaller quantities to achieve the best quality. They offer more than 20 delicious wines from sweet to dry, and even spicy. Chocolate and wine pairings are also available. You’ll never want to leave once you visit Fermenting Cellars Winery, which is located in a beautiful country log cabin home in the gentle rolling hills on the edge of Janesville. They offer a variety of dry and sweet, red and white, and a delicious dessert coffee wine.
3. Catch a live performance at the Janesville Performing Arts Center.
You’ll be in awe when you visit this lovely 637-seat theatre which is located in the historic Janesville High School/Marshall Junior High School building in downtown Janesville. The theatre is not only historic and beautiful, it also offers a variety of live performances throughout the year and includes a diverse mix of performances by resident user groups and touring professionals. Upcoming shows include Dueling Pianos on January 13, The Wonderbread Years on February 17 and Lisa Loeb on March 23.
4. Shop for treasures of a different kind!
One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and Janesville’s many antique, thrift, vintage and consignment stores offer ample opportunity to discover your treasure. Visit our website to find a listing of Janesville’s many resale shops or check out downtown Janesville for options closer to the heart of the city. A few favorites in the downtown include Carousel Consignments where you’ll find 4000 square feet packed full of antiques, collectibles, one-of-a-kind items and housewares. Across the street is Angie’s on Main, an eclectic gift/consignment shop with amazing handmade items, custom/personalized gifts, furniture, home decorations, antiques, etc. Just down the street is Main Street Peddlers where you’ll find primitive, farmhouse, mid-century modern, and vintage furniture and decor, plus handmade soaps, soy candles, hand-painted wooden signs, unique centerpieces, and quilted items crafted by local artisans. Many of their items are also available to rent for special event decorations or photography props.
5. Get ready for edge-of-your-seat action at a Janesville Jets game!
Bring the whole family out to the Janesville Ice Arena to cheer on the Janesville Jets as they deliver what is sure to be exciting hockey action. Not only are the games fun but the Jets are taking family entertainment to an all new high with game day promotions, giveaways, contests, and more. The Jets have been recipients of the All Midwet Division Team and Midwest Division Organization of the Year awards. Home games are played September through April and there is a public skate after most games. Upcoming home games: January 12, 13 & 26 and February 2, 3 & 23.
6. Grab your skis or your snowshoes and hit the trails!
Janesville’s Rockport Park boasts over 6 miles of scenic trails color coded for easy cross country navigation, and Riverside Golf Course offers a flat trail that is perfect for cross country beginners. Although Rockport Park and Riverside Golf Course offer the only groomed trails, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is allowed in any of Janesville’s more than 64 parks and greenbelts. Some ideal locations for snowshoeing in the area include: Robert O. Cook Memorial Arboretum, Blackhawk Golf Course, Northeast Regional Park, Riverside Park, Riverside Golf Course. The Janesville Trail Map is a great resource for cross country skiers as well as snowshoers, bikers and hikers. Don’t have snowshoes or cross country skis, check with City of Janesville’s Leisure Services Department. They offer low cost rentals to residents and visitors alike.
7. Sit back and relax or get up and boogie!
No matter your taste in music, you’ll find that Janesville, Wisconsin has everything from coffee shop jams to big-name concerts. Whether you’re looking for a quaint setting that features enjoyable performances by local talent, an opportunity to create your own music, or a big night on the town dancing or head banging, Janesville has it all! Known for its veriaty of local, regional and national acts Janesville’s Back Bar is a great place to find live music on the weekends. Since 1939, Voigt Music Center in downtown Janesville has served area musicians from students to professionals. This 12,000 square foot space located in a beautiful historical building is dedicated to learning, making and performing music for all ages and skill levels. Voigt offers guitars, drums, amps, keyboards, sheet music and more, as well as providing service to more than 20 area school districts. Janesville’s most cozy coffee house, Mocha Moment, offers an open mic night twice a month, on the first and third Wednesdays, from 6:30-8:30 PM.
