The Armenian Genocide was the first systematic, organized, and premeditated mass murder of the 20th century, carried out by Ottoman Turkish authorities between 1915 and 1918 during World War I. The atrocities were documented by numerous international eyewitnesses, including missionaries from the United States, Germany, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Among them was Susan Wealthy Orvis, who served with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in Turkey from 1902 to 1933. Her letters form the basis of Grit and Grace in a World Gone Mad: Humanitarianism in Talas, Turkey, 1908–1923, which highlights her humanitarian efforts during this period. Presented by Julie Orvis. Part of the HPL Book Fest.
