The Forward Motion mural was created by CJ Hungerman and is located next to the Frances Willard Schoolhouse on the Rock County Historical Society campus. The name is a nod to Wisconsin's "Forward" motto and to the freedom the bicycle represented for women. Frances Willard was a teacher, temperance reformer, women's suffragist, and social activist who grew up in Janesville. Later in life she learned to ride a bicycle, which she named Gladys, becoming part of a bigger story of women literally moving forward. The sunflower imagery is also connected to the American women's suffrage movement.
CJ has created many public art projects in Chicago and throughout the United States, including the We Rise mural, the Fowl Wall mural, and the Fowl Owl mural in downtown Janesville.
