Visit Oak Hill Cemetery, the oldest operating burial ground in Janesville, for a self-guided tour sponsored by the Rock County Historical Society that brings history to life by sharing stories of the dead, researched by local history experts. Discover the stories behind eleven local people who were commemorated with buildings and roads named after them. Greeters and way finders will help you along your way, and historical interpreters will be stationed at selected graves to tell the story of the person or family buried there. Guests are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather as October can be rainy, cold, or both. This tour is educational in nature and is not a haunted experience. Oak Hill is a working cemetery. All headstones, mausoleums, and burial plots should be treated with respect. Self-guided tours held Saturday & Sunday, October 23, 24 & 30 from 1 PM to 5 PM, and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, October 27, 28 & 29 from 4 PM to 6 PM. Tickets will be available online or by calling the RCHS, as well as at the cemetery immediately preceding each tour (cash only). Tours begin at the Oak Hill Chapel and will be held in all types of weather, unless there is lightning, in which case tours will be cancelled.
